The base is actually made of a spongy like material, it's hard enough that you can walk comfortably and not lose your balance and the shoe keeps its shape, but soft enough that it doesn't hurt your feet like normal wedges where you feel like you are walking on a piece of wood. I would suggest you measure the bridge of your feet because of the strap.
